Denison’s Wine Heritage:
T.V. MunsonThomas Volney Munson (1843-1913), the internationally known horticulturist, developed over 300 new grape varieties. He is best known for his work in fighting the phylloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century, which nearly wiped out the world’s vineyards. His solution- grafting native rootstocks- earned him the Chevalier du Merite Agricole in the French Legion of Honor and numerous accolades from around the world. T.V. Munson ,the Viticulture and Enology Center is part of Grayson County College and is one of five schools in the US where amateur and professional wine makers can learn how to grow grapes and make fine wines.

Denison’s New Wine Heritage:
Started in 1996, the annual Art and Wine Renaissance is unique as it combines wine, food, music, and art into a festive evening affair. Texas wineries host their first wine tasting event of the year in Denison. Local restaurants feature samplings of their favorite dishes. There is also a cognac-tasting table hosted by Denison’s Sister City. Cognac, France. Regional artists compete in a juried art show to have their works selected as the official poster and wine label for the year. The event is a collaborative effort of Denison Arts Council, Downtown Denison, Inc. and the Denison Main Street Program.
